General FAQs for All
What is the difference between ERW & seamless pipe?
ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe and seamless pipe are both major categories of steel pipe, but their manufacture and use are different.
| Basis of Difference | ERW Pipe | Seamless Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing Process | Made by rolling steel strip (coil) and joining it with electric resistance. | Solid steel bar is made by heating and molding it into a pipe shape without any welding. |
| Welding Line | It has a straight welding line. | There is no welding, so it is called “seamless”. |
| Price | Relatively cheap. | Expensive because the manufacturing process is complex. |
| Strength | Suitable for normal pressure. | Better for high pressure, temperature, and special industrial needs. |
| Usage | Water supply, agriculture, general structure. | Oil and gas, power plant, high temperature and pressure areas. |
Is ERW steel strong?
Yes, ERW steel is quite strong and is sufficient for general industrial, structural and domestic uses.
However, its welding line can be a weak point when compared to seamless pipe if it is subjected to high pressure or extreme temperatures.
What does ERW stand for?
In this process, steel is rolled into a pipe shape and then the edges are welded together using electric resistance heat. This process is fast, economical and suitable for mass production.
Is ERW mild steel?
ERW is a manufacturing technique, while mild steel is a material.
So, ERW pipes can be, and often are, made from mild steel.
This means you may see “ERW mild steel pipe” as a generic product used in construction, drainage, structures, etc.
